When you board an airplane, who do you expect to see on the flight deck?
Airplanes piloted by women captains or first officers make up an average of 5.8% of total flights globally. The International Society of Women Airline Pilots wants to change that by encouraging aspiring female aviators and supporting women pilots already in the workforce.
The nonprofit collected this data in 2020, so the numbers might be slightly different now as we head into 2025. The data wasn't easy to get and I could not find any other reliable sources for my visual. Working with a retired 747 pilot and former board member, I filled in the gaps with some online sleuthing.

Thousands of young girls are entering flight school, becoming flight instructors themselves and then pursuing careers as commercial pilots. With social media, you can follow their journeys. Several all-female crew long-haul flights have made the news in the last few years.
